My Latest EP

I recently released a small EP on SoundCloud. This project has been a long time coming, and I wanted to share a bit about the journey that led me here.

I’ve been a folk musician for years—just me, a guitar, and my voice. In my early 20s, I recorded three or four EPs, played sets at Queen Street Mall, and did gigs at places like Rick’s Bar. Back then, I thought music was my path, but as much as I loved writing and performing, the reality of being a musician—both financially and logistically—was tough. Over time, I stepped back from it, though I never stopped writing. Sometimes, I’d post snippets on Instagram or YouTube, but I wasn’t doing anything serious with my music.

Breaking Out of the Box

I started to feel stuck in the guitar-and-voice setup. I wanted to evolve, to experiment. Then I watched the Lil Peep documentary (before even listening to his music). Something about his approach really struck me. I wasn’t drawn to the exact themes of his music, but his sound, his energy, and his rawness resonated.

So, I decided to try something new. I picked up a beat pad and a MIDI keyboard from a Cash Converters, thinking I’d teach myself to make beats. Turns out, I’m not naturally gifted at production (and looping pedals still confuse me), but I found a way. I started using Splice to curate loops, building tracks in Ableton. From there, I’d create vocal lines and rough melodies, then bring them to my producer and friend, Levi Russell. Levi helped clean up my (usually offbeat) drum patterns and re-recorded my vocals in a way that really elevated the tracks. The process was exciting—it gave me a new way to express myself beyond just guitar and lyrics.

The Songs

This EP is personal. My music has always been a way to process sadness, usually around relationships, and these tracks are no different.

  • “Deadlines” – is a quiet rebellion—a tired, soft, and introspective reflection on burnout and the weight of always having to keep up. Wrapped in mellow beats, trap-inspired drums, and hazy synths, the track feels like a late-night sigh after too many long days.

  • “Turn to Cinder” – explores themes of feeling misunderstood, lost, and frustrated. It reflects on the fear of both literal and metaphorical darkness, the exhaustion of explaining yourself, and the irritation that comes from dealing with others’ noise and drama.

  • “Star Shopping - Lil Peep Cover” – A nod to a large part of the inspiration behind this project. I reimagined one of his songs in my own style.

  • “I Said” – a reflective exploration of a connection that sits somewhere between casual and meaningful. With a soft yet quick-paced delivery, the track navigates the blurred lines of friendship, fleeting intimacy, and the unspoken complexities of what could’ve been.

  • “Water Under The Bridge” – is a raw post-mortem of a friendship turned toxic—a smooth yet biting track that layers R&B vocals over sharp trap beats and a haunting piano melody. It’s a slow burn, starting off soft and detached before escalating into a crescendo of frustration, resignation, and finality.

Why SoundCloud?

These songs were finalised two years ago, but I stalled on releasing them. I think I was struggling with where they belonged. While I love Spotify as a listener, I resent the cost and structure for independent artists. Since I don’t plan to pursue music as a career or invest in all the things needed to make money from it, SoundCloud felt like a better fit. It’s no longer just an underground platform, and I like the way they support artists.

Final Thoughts

This EP is a reflection of growth—musically, emotionally, and personally. It’s me stepping out of my comfort zone, trying new things, and, ultimately, letting go. I’m really proud of it.
